The team at Metcalf Institute is excited to welcome eight (8) Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications winners to an all-new summer workshop!
This immersive experience is designed to bring together science communicators from around the world to engage deeply with leading scientists, researchers, and experts; explore emerging scientific challenges and opportunities; and strengthen reporting grounded in evidence and context. Through collaborative discussions, field-based learning, and peer exchange, awardees will expand their professional networks while gaining new insights to inform impactful journalism.
In this inaugural workshop, participating awardees will explore pressing environmental and climate challenges, including the impacts of plastic pollution on ecosystems, climate change and marine life, oyster restoration as a tool for ecosystem resilience, and the role of Indigenous agricultural knowledge in building sustainable food systems. The workshop will be held at the University of Rhode Island July 27-31, 2026.
