Graduate Audition Requirements
The portfolio should consist of 5 scores of original compositions (no arrangements please), accompanied by at least three audio recording of the pieces submitted. The other two pieces may be a synthetic/midi version if no audio recording is available.
The compositions should display:
- A diversity of styles, showing an understanding of avant-garde techniques
- Diverse instrumentation (for instance: solo, vocal, chamber ensemble, electronics, large ensemble)
- Rhythmic and metric sophistication
- Harmonic inventiveness, and exploration of post-tonal harmonies
- Motivic and melodic artistry
- Textural refinement
- Strong sense of structure and form
- Attention to scoring details (dynamics, tempos, articulations, tonguing, bowings)
