College of Nursing Students complete fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital

Two URI College of Nursing students, Stephanie O’Neil and Bintou Marong, have completed a 10-week fellowship at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital.

Bintou Maroug said of this experience:

The Carol Ghiloni Oncology Fellowship located at Massachusetts General Hospital, aids students who have an interest in oncology to delve first hand into this specialty and gain the experience and knowledge needed to be successful in this field. The two of us, along with two other students, were picked from a pool of nationally qualified students to pursue their dream for ten (10) weeks at Massachusetts General Hospital. We were able to expand our knowledge of oncology through a vast number of experiences such as shadowing a Nurse Practitioner, observing in the OR, observing in Interventional Radiation, shadowing a Palliative Care Nurse, observing  in the Pediatric Oncology Clinic and Leukemia Clinic just to name a few. We spent a lot of our time with our nurse preceptors expanding our nursing knowledge and gaining new skills such as phlebotomy, confirming chemo orders, how to give chemo, hanging IV’s, removing peripheral IV’s, etc.

This fellowship was one of the best things that happened to us and I am sure Stephanie would agree. We were able to see what oncology nursing was about and gain an appreciation for this wonderfully amazing field. Along the way we met many professionals and patients who touched our lives in ways that cannot be described. My hope is that other URI nursing students will know about this opportunity so they too can grow not only as a nurse but as a person if they have an interest in Oncology.
