Bintou Camara ’17 was recruited from the Talent Development Program to the CON Pathways Program. After attending Bay View Academy and Bishop Keough High School she graduated from Central Falls High School, where her teacher David Upegui first sparked her interest in science and steered her toward a career in the medical field.
Thanks to the Talent Development Program, she was able to get a head start for the College of Nursing by taking summer courses that included Library 100 and Nursing 100. She also credits the Academic Enhancement Center and student tutors for providing help in math and other science courses. Like other students in the Pathways Program, Central Falls did not really provide an adequate background for the rigorous academics found in Nursing.
“Time management was critical for success,” she said. However, there needs to be a balance between academics and campus life.” She has a great network of friends, to provide encouragement and support.
Bintou feels she has “nicely settled into URI life,” and is involved in a wide range of activities on campus. She is a Student Ambassador, president of the Multicultural Student Nurse Association, and a member of the P.I.N.K Woman Sisterhood. She plans to enjoy her last year a URI by studying hard and taking advantage of any opportunities that come along, which she hopes will include a one-month study abroad trip to Spain this fall with Professor Trubiano.
After graduation, Bintou wants to work in the field of oncology with graduate school and a career as a nurse practitioner in her future.
