Detailed Course Description
Pharmacy practice in health systems has undergone profound and dynamic changes recently. Automated systems for distribution and physician order entry have begun to transform the role of the pharmacist. This 3-credit elective course will provide PharmD students an in-depth understanding of institutional pharmacy practice. Current hospital pharmacy pharmacists will provide the comprehensive curriculum.
It is the intent of this course to provide the foundation necessary for students to enter a hospital practice environment and have a clear understanding of the different departments and roles a pharmacist may participate in to effectively care for patients.
Activities/Class Format
Didactic lectures
Lectures will be given by current hospital pharmacists throughout the state of Rhode Island and will cover topics related to the practice of pharmacy in a hospital setting. Examples of topics covered in the past have been pediatric pharmacotherapy, formulary systems, technology in health systems, and transplant pharmacy.

You will be assigned a group to work on a final presentation, which will be presented toward the end of the course. The presentation will simulate a presentation to a hospital pharmacy and therapeutics committee. The presentation will be approximately 30 minutes in length and cover topics related to the implementation of a novel program for a health system.
