College hosts Youngken Pharmacy Clinic; URI Pharm.D. students awarded scholarships

Eight URI College of Pharmacy students were awarded scholarships Thursday during the college’s 63rd annual Heber W. Youngken Jr. Pharmacy Clinic.

The conference, named for the inaugural dean of the URI College of Pharmacy, brought together practicing pharmacists and pharmacy educators for a continuing education summit hosted by the College of Pharmacy and Academic Health Collaborative’s Office of Continuing Professional Development for the Health Professions. Ordinarily an in-person professional decvelopment ewvent, the clinic was held bvirtually this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The scholarship awards were presented to the students during a lunchtime ceremony. The URI Pharm.D student winners include:

This year’s annual Youngken Pharmacy Clinic focused on the ongoing pandemic, including the race to develop a vaccine, as well as the health of people who use illicit drugs, anticoagulation and local pharmacy law. The event offered 5 live Contact Hours of continuing pharmacy education credit and will include 1 hour of Pharmacy Law CE and 1 hour of Immunization CE.

Presentations included:

  • “Harm Reduction: Improving Health Among People Who Use Drugs,” hosted by Jeffrey Bratberg, Clinical Professor, URI College of Pharmacy.
  • “Anticoagulation: Pharmacologic Management Update,” hosted by Nicole Asal, Clinical Associate Professor, URI College of Pharmacy; and Satah Albinese, Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, RI Hospital.
  • “COVID-19 and Vaccines: Immunization During a Global Pandemic,” hosted by Bratberg; N’Deye Dabo, PharmD student, URI College of Pharmacy; and Trisha Washburn, Chief, RI Department of Health Office of Immunization.
  • “COVID-19: Where We Were, Where We Are, Where We Could Be Rhode Island,” hosted by James McDonald, chief administrative officer and medical director, RI Department of Health Drug Overdose Prevention Program.
  • “Prescription Drug Monitoring Program,” hosted by Peter Ragosta, chief administrative officer, RI Department of Health Board of Pharmacy.

The event wrapped up with a URI College of Pharmacy alumni virtual reception, hosted by Amy Simonini, assistant director of Alumni Engagement. Photos of some of the presentations are below:
