URI pharmacy students compete in national Pharmacy and Therapeutics Competition

A group of University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy students achieved a noteworthy milestone recently, competing in the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) Foundation’s National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Competition.

In this challenging contest, students from the URI chapter of AMCP joined teams from colleges of pharmacy across the country to work through a case study of a new medication, assessing its value, comparative effectiveness and pharmacoeconomic data. The drug selected for this year’s competition was the abaloparatide (Tymplos®), which is a novel injectable therapy for women with osteoporosis at high risk for fracture.

The college’s team was comprised of PharmD students Cecilia Costello, Matthew Lefebvre, Rebecca Menghi, Imke Scheepers and Adam Turenne.  The students received a travel grant from the college to attend the AMCP Annual Meeting in San Diego, held March 25-28, where the winner of the competition was announced. While the students did not earn the top prize, they gained valuable experience analyzing information to support managed care decision-making. They are excited to compete (and win!) in 2020.
