Biography

Dr. Pawasauskas is a Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, and a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist Kent Hospital in Warwick, Rhode Island, and Baxter Palliative Care in Wakefield, Rhode Island.  She is responsible for pain management content in the Doctor of Pharmacy program in required coursework, and has been teaching an interdisciplinary elective course in palliative care at the University for over 20 years. 

She is currently Chair of the College of Pharmacy Assessment Committee, ensuring achievement of programmatic learning outcomes for the Doctor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and graduate programs.  She is also Chair of the current ad hoc committee for ACPE accreditation of the Doctor of Pharmacy program for the College of Pharmacy.  At Kent Hospital, she is a resource for providers with complex pain management cases, and precepts students completing their clinical rotations in general internal medicine at the site.  She is a previous co-chair of the hospital’s Pain Management Clinical Steering Committee, and has worked closely with medical staff to create pain management protocols and perform drug safety surveillance.  She also precepts students and provides pharmacy consultative services to Baxter Palliative Care, a home-based palliative care medical practice that cares for patients with complex symptom management needs.   

She is a past Chair of the Pain & Palliative Care Practice & Research Network of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. 

Research

Dr. Pawasauskas is a currently a member of the Kent Hospital Institutional Review Board.  Her research activities have involved examining drug therapy approaches to (1) reduce opioid-related adverse events in hospitalized patient populations, (2) explore safe and effective analgesic strategies for nursing home residents, and (3) evaluate strategies to improve symptom management and medication-related challenges for palliative care patients in the home setting.  She has collaborated with industry partners to examine pharmacokinetic properties of emerging and existing analgesic strategies.   At the College, Dr. Pawasauskas was instrumental on implementing computer-based testing and analyzes outcomes related to the functionality of the testing software.
