Please join the URI Graduate School in congratulating the recent Discovery@URI Award winners.  The Discovery@URI event, held on 13 April 2011, showcased the breadth and wealth of research, scholarship and innovative endeavors being undertaken at URI.  Out of roughly 100 stellar students and groups who presented their fascinating work at this event, our award recipients distinguished themselves and deserve specific accolades.

First Place – Simon Sarkisian

The FIRST PLACE honors were awarded to Simon Sarkisian, a MS student in the College of Pharmacy, and his group for their work on “Inhibition of Bacterial Growth and Biofilm Production by Metabolites from Hypericum spp”.  Along with a certificate of award, there was a $600 prize.
SECOND PLACE honors were awarded to Leanne Elder, a PhD student in College of the Environment and Life Sciences.  Her work on “Implications of Global Climate Change and Declining Oceanic Oxygen Levels for the hyperiid amphipod Phronima” earned her the $400 prize as well as a certificate of award.

Third Place – Joseph Schrader

There was a three-way tie for THIRD PLACE honors with each receiving certificates of award as well as a $200 prize.  Anna Malek, a PhD Student in the Graduate School of Oceanography, looking into “Zoning for Offshore Development: Fisheries Ecosystem Dynamics in Rhode Island’s Coastal Waters” was one of the recipients.  Miao Song, a PhD Student in the College of Engineering, working on “Assessing the Tailgating Situation on Urban Rhode Island Highways and Potential Counter-tailgating Measures” was another.  The third in the tie was Joseph Schrader, a BS Student in the College of Pharmacy, doing work with “Synthesis, Purification, and In-Silico Modeling of Second Generation Anti-Epileptic Compounds”.
