The University of Rhode Island has selected Paula Grammas, former executive director of the Garrison Institute on Aging at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and an international leader in the study of Alzheimer’s disease, to be the inaugural director of The George & Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience. She will also become the Thomas M. Ryan Professor of Neuroscience at URI.

Over the course of the College of Pharmacy’s hundred year history in Providence and Kingston, there have been a number of watershed years. The opening of the Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and Allied Sciences Benefit Street building in Providence in 1924, the move of that College to URI in Kingston in 1957, the opening of Fogarty Hall in 1964, our adoption of an “All-Pharm.D.” program in 1998, the initial funding of the INBRE research program at URI in 2001 and completion of our current pharmacy building in 2012 come to mind. Periods of great change and the potential for accelerated advancement. 2016 is shaping up to be one of those transformative years.

Biomedical Science Professor David Rowley and his team in the College of Pharmacy have found that a class of complex carbohydrates could enhance treatment of urinary tract infections. Their findings appear in a recent issue of the Journal of Functional Foods, published by the International Society for Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods.

Pharm.D. student Steven Mathews, along with grad students Matthew Blake and Stephen Norris, developed a poster presentation on 3D modeling and printing as teaching tools in the URI Pharmacy curriculum. They presented their work at the Gordon Research Conference on Visualization in Science and Education, which brought together visualization specialists from around the world.

This past August, 15 brothers from Beta Epsilon, URI’s Chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Inc. traveled to Denver, Colorado for the biennial international meeting known as the Grand Council Convention. Beta Epsilon’s two delegates, Joe Nardolillo and Dominic DeFilipi, voted on many legislative changes as well as elected the new international officers.

URI pharmacy students interested in pursuing post-grad residences are very well prepared, thanks the URI Residency/Fellowship Preparation Program. In fact, last year the College ranked 10th nationally among 127 schools for matching 86 percent of its participating students with an appropriate post-graduate residency program. The national average is 63 percent.
