Sixth Annual Walgreens Summer Academy
August 14-16, 2018
The URI College of Pharmacy Walgreens Summer Academy is a 3-day 2-night residential academic program intended to encourage under-represented minority students to pursue careers in the field of community pharmacy.
Program Objectives
- To introduce under-represented minority students to the expanding practice of pharmaceutical care through hands-on experiences in a non-risk environment with physical assessment, patient counseling, compounding, and immunization services.
- To provide under-represented minority students with the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships with health professionals, student pharmacists and pharmacy faculty.
Hands-on practice
- Basic physical exam techniques, including assessment of the cardiovascular system.
- Patient interviewing skills and techniques for counseling patients regarding their disease states and medications.
- Pharmaceutical compounding and sterile intravenous product preparation.
- Clinical pharmacy practice initiatives including immunizations and other public health projects.
Cost
Sponsored in full by generous support from Walgreens Pharmacy (usual cost $200/student)
- Includes housing, lunch for three days, dinner for 2 days, breakfast for 2 days, course materials, and activities (does not cover additional meals/snacks, spending money, or personal hygiene items)

How to Apply
If you are interested in applying for a place in the Summer Academy please review the following criteria and complete the application form below. Spaces are limited and will be awarded by the review committee based on the information provided on the application form.
Eligibility Criteria
- High school students who will enter the 10th, 11th or 12th grade in the Fall of 2018 (10th or 11th grade preferred)
- Students must have an expressed interest in pharmacy as a potential career path
- Preference will be given to students who are from under-represented minority groups, have Spanish language abilities, and/or are financially disadvantaged
- Students must be in a college preparatory curriculum in their respective high school
- Students must have a cumulative un-weighted GPA of 3.00 or higher
- Students must have proof of health insurance and immunizations
Deadlines
Applications must be submitted by June 15, 2018. Review: Applications will be reviewed and successful applicants will be informed by June 22, 2018. During the review process applicants may be contacted to requested additional information to support their application.
