Readmission to a Degree Program

READMISSION OF SERVICE MEMBERS

The University of Rhode Island is committed to supporting students whose education is interrupted by military service. In accordance with federal regulations (34 CFR 668.18), eligible service members are entitled to prompt readmission to the University with the same academic status they held prior to their military absence.

Students who leave URI to perform qualifying military service must notify the University of their service and, upon completion, indicate their intent to return. Generally, students must request readmission within three years of completing military service or within two years following recovery from a service-related illness or injury.

Eligible service members will be readmitted to the same academic program (or the closest equivalent if the program is no longer offered), with the same enrollment status, completed credits, and academic standing they held before their absence. The University will make reasonable efforts to assist returning students in resuming their studies, including providing academic support when necessary.

Military-related absences of up to five cumulative years are generally protected under federal law, with several exceptions for certain involuntary activations, national emergencies, and other qualifying services.

Students seeking readmission under these provisions may be asked to provide documentation of their military service, such as a DD-214, military orders, or other official records. The University will not delay readmission due to unavailable documentation when eligibility can otherwise be reasonably established.

For assistance with military readmission, students should contact the Office of Admission at 401-874-7100 or visit the Military and Veterans Education Office website.

For additional information regarding federal readmission requirements for service members, please visit the U.S. Department of Education’s guidance on Institutional Readmission Requirements for Servicemembers

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

You must apply for readmission if you previously were admitted to an undergraduate program of study at the University and have had a break of at least one regular (Spring or Fall) semester, whether or not you completed the formal withdrawal process. A break in continuous attendance automatically terminates your active student status, so you must readmit to continue toward a degree.

You may seek readmission into a college and/or program different from that which you formerly attended. If you have earned at least 25 credits toward graduation, you may submit your application for readmission directly to the degree-granting college. Readmission is not guaranteed, and students must meet all GPA, course and/or College requirements for the major to which they seek to readmit. Students should contact the College directly for specific readmission requirements.

If you have graduated from the University and want to pursue a second undergraduate degree, you may need to apply for readmission. Students should speak with their Dean’s Office to determine whether readmission is required.

Deadline: Applications for readmission to programs on the traditional calendar must be submitted to the Degree Granting College no later than August 15 for the fall semester, May 10 for the summer semester and December 31 for the spring semester.
