IACUC
Application Review Process

URI faculty and staff (including post-doctoral researchers) who plan to use vertebrate animals in research or teaching activities must submit applications for IACUC review prior to commencing the activity. Applicants must submit application materials to the IACUC at least three weeks prior to the date of the scheduled IACUC meeting. Please allow at least 4-6 weeks for protocol review, depending on the complexity of the project and the extent of revisions required. Refer to the Protocol Review Process Flow Chart and Guide.

Principal investigators (PI) are encouraged to present their applications at IACUC meetings. Individuals planning to present their application will be emailed an approximate time to be present at the meeting and the location of the meeting.

Protocol Submission
All information must be submitted through IRBNet. For more information regarding IRBNet, see IRBNet Access and Guidance. The IACUC application is available on IRBNet under Forms and Templates and also here:

In addition to the IACUC Protocol form, other documents may be required. Some common examples include:

Modifications to an Approved Study
Changes/modifications to an IACUC-approved project must be reviewed and approved by the IACUC prior to their implementation. Requested modifications to IACUC-approved research and teaching protocols are considered either minor or major. The document required for Changes/modifications to an IACUC-approved project is an IACUC Protocol Amendment Form found on IRBNet under Forms and Templates and also above under protocol submission.

Renewal/Updates to an Approved Study
All approved protocols must be renewed every three years using the IACUC Protocol/Three Year Renewal Form. Three year renewals require updating all protocol information onto the latest protocol forms and are reviewed as if they are new protocols. Reminders are sent via IRBNet prior to expiration.
