URI CITI Guidance:
Training
CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) Program
Required compliance training for University of Rhode Island Investigators and Study Personnel is offered through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative, commonly called the CITI Program.
CITI training is required for:
- Human Subjects Research:Investigators and Study Personnel conducting biomedical research and/or social/behavioral research involving human subjects. All Investigators and Study Personnel should select the learner group, “Group I (Social Behavioral)” or the Refresher Course when your certification for this learner group is close to expiration. The Refresher Course will be available 60 days prior to the expiration of your current CITI completion.
- Good Clinical Practice (GCP): Investigators and Study Personnel conducting a clinical trial as defined by NIH should select the learner group, “GCP for Clinical Trials with Investigational Drugs and Medical Devices (U.S. FDA Focus).”
- Animal Subjects Research:Investigators and Study Personnel conducting research involving vertebrate animals. Appropriate learner groups depend on the details of the research.
- Biosafety:Investigators and Study Personnel conducting research involving biological materials (refresher training only).
- Financial Conflict of Interest:Investigators conducting research funded by a PHS agency or other agency following PHS Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) Regulations.
- Responsible Conduct of Research:Graduate students with a research thesis or dissertation; post-doctoral researchers; researchers supported by National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), or U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Appropriate learner group depends on the discipline of the research; see “RCR Course Options” below for more details.
- Export Controls:Investigators and Study Personnel using or purchasing Export Controlled equipment, software, or technology.
- Research Security:Lead Principal Investigators and Key Personnel conducting research funded by any federal agency. All Lead Principal Investigators and Key Personnel should select the learner group, “Research Security Training (Combined Course).”

Completing Courses
Available courses are listed on the landing page. Courses are classified as “Active” (i.e., in progress), “Courses Ready to Begin,” and “Completed Courses.”
- Click the “Continue Course” button to continue a course that is currently in progress.
- Click the “Start Now” button to begin a course.
- Click the “Review Course” button to review the content of a completed course.
Courses generally take from 30 minutes – 3 hours to complete. Courses need not be completed in one sitting.
When you have completed all the required modules successfully, you will be able to save a copy of your completion certificate. Please retain a copy of the certificate for your records. You can also access your completion certificate by clicking the “View – Print – Share Record” button for any completed course.
Note: CITI course completions are integrated into the InfoEd system automatically, so you will not need to upload your completion certificates. CITI course completions are not integrated into IRBNet, so you will be required to upload your CITI completion certificate with every protocol submitted on IRBNet.
Adding New Courses
- At the bottom of the landing page under “Learner Tools for University of Rhode Island” click “Add a Course.” On this page you will be presented with all the modules available through CITI.
- Scroll through the questions and choose the modules that fit your specific needs. Press “Submit” when done selecting courses.
- Note: Choosing a module does not mean you necessarily have to complete it. It will only make these modules available for completion. See the top of this page for course requirements.
