The Chronic Pain Self Management Program* is a six week program led by two peer facilitators pairs participants with the equips participants with the tools needed to manage pain. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
Relaxation techniques, action plans, and pacing activity and rest are a few of the methods discussed in this group-based program to equip participants with the tools needed to manage pain. Subjects covered in the workshop include:
- Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, isolation, and poor sleep
- Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
- Appropriate use of medications
- Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
- Nutrition
- Pacing activity and rest
- Evaluating new treatments
Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Pain and an audio relaxation CD, Relaxation for Mind and Body.
Individuals 18 years or older, living with chronic pain, family members, caregivers, and friends are invited to participate.
