Public service comes in many forms but John Tassoni, Jr. has cornered the market on helping his community. After serving Rhode Island as a State Senator from Smithfield for 12 years John is building the Sentinel Group. The Sentinel Group is an integrated marketing services, media relations, labor relations, government relations and community action organization.

While offering several services to a diverse market John has had to juggle his marketing efforts while overseeing a team of dedicated workers. As the service delivery demands have risen John has expanded his existing site on George Washington Highway to include a building on Putnam Pike. Together the Sentinel Group and Navigant Credit Union provided a total investment of $250,000 to purchase the building. John said that the RISBDC “was most helpful on a business plan and advice to move forward with my business.” With the leadership team settled in at the new property the Sentinel Group is poised to expand its influence throughout Rhode Island.

Currently, the Group publishes two newspapers, Common Ground, which targets the statewide labor industry, and the Smithfield Times, which is a monthly, general information coffee table style news publication. The Times provides local interest stories and opinion pieces from a variety of general interest writers. Everything you need to know about the Town of Smithfield can be found in the Times. John expects to use the Smithfield Times as a model for other local publications.

John’s efforts to improve the quality of life for his community has garnered a wide range of awards and honors. Some of these include the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty, Bruce F. Vento Award, the Senator Jack Reed Advocacy Award for his national leadership on affordable housing and homelessness and the Rhode Island Labor Professionals Achievement Award for his dedication to the field of assistance to union members. He is a recipient of the Transportation Safety Award from the RI DOT and has been named a Traffic Safety Hero by AAA Southern New England. John has also received awards from the Mental Health Association of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Housing, and the Rhode Island National Guard.
John has built his business the old fashion way by giving to the community.
