While reestablishing his cigar business closer to target customers in Chepachet, RI, Douglas Lovett expanded to create a place where fine tastes come together.
Rebranded in 2019 to incorporate his two passions, Lovett’s Fine Cigars & Arts presents clients with an opportunity to enjoy the best in cigars and features work from local artists, including his own, for sale inside the store.
Since reopening in Chepachet, with a mantra that “location is everything,” his success has stemmed the diversity of his offerings, drawing in tourists and locals alike. His current business model meets his target customers where they are, bringing a vast selection of cigar and tobacco related products, while also enhancing the local business and arts communities with a venue for sales.
To assist with expenses and position his business for future growth, Lovett recently acquired several of the units surrounding his storefront. This additional income has allowed him to strategize ways to weather the seasonality of the cigar business and the impact of COVID-19.
For help with the acquisition of the new units, Lovett turned to the RISBDC and worked with Central Regional Director Amit Basnet for loan package guidance. After acquiring a loan to finance the acquisition, Lovett continues to work with the RISBDC on growth strategies.
“With the tools, steering, and coaching Amit provided,” Lovett said, “I was seen as a viable option to the credit union.”
