Meet Whole Foods’ 2022 Supplier of the Year: The Backyard Food Company

In 2013, two dads, Louby Sukkar and Matt McClelland, became business partners with a startup condiment company that grew out of their backyard gardens (hence the name Backyard Food Co.) Fast forward 9 years later In May 2022, the company was awarded Whole Foods Market Supplier of the Year for the North Atlantic Region at WFM Tribal Gathering in Austin, TX with over 1,100 leaders and buyers from around the globe. Their journey from their backyard gardens to Hope & Main (a food incubator in Warren, RI) to the shelves of hundreds of Whole Foods stores has been challenging and arduous, but very rewarding.

Over the years, they have grown to twenty products available at Whole Foods, while staying true to their roots, cooking in small batches with simple, fresh ingredients just like they use at home. Their primary goal? To always deliver and always exceed expectations.

In early 2021, Louby connected with RISBDC team member,  Amit Basnet, to continue building the business. Through this partnership, The Backyard Food Company was selected to participate in the Edward Lowe Foundation System for Integrated Growth® (SIG) program sponsored by the RISBDC. SIG® helps second-stage business owners accelerate their growth over a 12-week engagement where they address issues that directly impact growth. Having participated in two rounds of SIG® engagements, Backyard Food Company positioned itself to scale for national retail markets as well as online marketplaces.

“It’s been a great experience, now we have to execute the strategies we learned during the SIG® program.”
