Jen Beirola is an Air Force veteran who has been tattooing for more than 20 years and operated a successful tattoo parlor when she was stationed in Omaha, Nebraska. In early 2022, when she returned to Rhode Island, she contacted the RISBDC looking for assistance opening a tattoo parlor after finding a promising building in Middletown.
While working on plans to secure the building, Jen worked with a local lender who required her to submit a business plan and financial projections. Upon the recommendation of her lender, Jen connected with RISBDC Director, Greater Newport Region, Paul Harden.
Paul helped Jen refine the business plan to ensure it contained the information lenders sought. He also helped develop financial projections that showed both the start-up expenses and the growth of the business after it opened.
The property purchase was a complex transaction as it was a 1031 exchange tied to Jen’s former store in Omaha. Still, fortunately, she had both a lender and an attorney who were familiar with this type of transaction. As a result, Rocky Shores Tattoo Company officially opened in November 2022.
