Graduate Courses

  • OCG 693: Molecular Ecology - This course examines how the field of ecology is being influenced by the advent and application of genetic tools. Course goals are for students to gain confidence reading primary literature from the field, understand the breadth of genetic methods available and to explore possible applications of genetics tools to their own research.
  • OCG 594: Marine Plankton - This course examines the biodiversity, ecology and evolution of marine plankton in the context of the oceanic environment. Topics include life cycles, geographic and temporal distributions, drivers of diversity, food web dynamics, biological-environmental interactions, and the role of plankton in biogeochemical cycles.
  • OCG 593: Big Data, Big Oceans - This course aims to improve the experimental design, analysis and communication skills of student researchers. Discussions cover current questions in marine sciences, experimental design and methods, quantitative analyses techniques, and written and oral presentation styles. Students present their own research results, evaluate presentations by other students and participate in discussions of the relevant literature.

Undergraduate Courses

  • Bio 210 : Bermuda Marine Biodiversity - This course will provide students with hands-on experience in biodiversity assessment in the field. The class is based at the Bermuda Institute for Ocean Sciences (BIOS), where we blend fieldwork, lectures and laboratory manipulation to explore diversity in the subtropical waters.
  • Bio 208: The invisible living ocean - The goal of this course is to explore the major groups of eukaryotic organisms that are largely underappreciated. These organisms fuel the marine food web, drive global biogeochemical cycles and affect climate. We focus on the evolution of, and interactions between, some of the most important organisms on the planet.
