Biography

Madison Jones is an assistant professor in the Departments of Writing & Rhetoric and Natural Resources Science at the University of Rhode Island, where he is a Senior Fellow at the Coastal Institute and directs the DWELL Lab. He studies the role of emerging technologies in public science writing and environmental advocacy. His research focuses on science writing and environmental rhetoric, combining location-based media (like digital maps, smartphone apps, and augmented reality) and creative writing methods to draw upon the power of place for public communication, science storytelling, and environmental advocacy. His articles have appeared in peer-reviewed journals including Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Enculturation, and Rhetoric Review. His articles were twice selected for the Best Article on Technical or Scientific Communication by NCTE/CCCC. He is the author of the poetry collections Losing the Dog (Salmon, 2023) and Reflections on the Dark Water (Solomon & George, 2016), and has published over fifty individual poems in journals such as The Southern Review, Prairie Schooner, and Michigan Quarterly Review. Through STEEP’s Research Translation Core, Dr. Jones will work with other team members to design and create bespoke messaging and communication projects which use creative strategies in concert with digital storytelling approaches to communicating the effects of PFAS to local communities in Rhode Island. Dr. Jones received his Ph.D. in Writing and Rhetoric from the University of Florida in 2020.
