Research

  • Intravenous acetaminophen was approved by the FDA in November 2010.
  • Clinical trials have demonstrated many benefits of IV acetaminophen in the post operative orthopedic setting, and have compared the use of IV acetaminophen with both placebo and morphine for post-operative pain management.

• These studies found that the use of IV acetaminophen was associated with greater pain relief, less opioid use, increased patient satisfaction, and fewer drug related adverse events.(1,2)
• Significant reductions in opioid related adverse events of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, have been seen in patients treated with IV acetaminophen.(2)

  • The use of IV acetaminophen could reducstaye costs by reducing opioid needs, adverse events, time in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), and length of hospital.
