About The Role
Academic Coaches are URI students (sophomores and up) who work one-on-one “coaching” students to succeed academically in the college environment. Depending on what they wish to focus on, you will help students build skills in organization, time management, study strategies, motivation/procrastination, and goal-setting.
As a coach, you’ll be a supportive guide, working individually with peers to help them develop skills and strategies to address their unique strengths, challenges, needs, and goals as college students.
In their first semester in the role, coaches enroll in CSV 302: AEC Academic Coaching Practicum for 3 credits of service learning/training hours.
Once you have completed a semester of the Academic Coaching Practicum course, you will be eligible to continue as an academic coach in the AEC for pay or credit, with opportunities for additional leadership roles and responsibilities.
About the Course
CSV 302: AEC Academic Coaching Practicum serves two purposes:
- as a training class designed to teach you how to be an effective academic coach supporting peers, and
- a practicum in which you apply those skills in actual appointments with students.
Weekly Time Commitment:
- 1.5 hours/week for our class meetings on Wednesdays 5-6:30pm (in-person group training/collaboration with fellow academic coaches)
- 6 hours/week for individual coaching hours (in-person practicum hours in Roosevelt Hall when you are on-site and available to take academic coaching appointments with students seeking support)
In addition to their focus on supporting individual students, academic coaches in the Fall 2024 cohort of CSV 302 also developed and led a 90-minute Study Planning workshop for students in Seeds of Success, facilitated a Academic Success Strategies workshop for the College of Engineering’s FastTrack Program, and conducted outreach visits to URI 101 classes in collaboration with the Undergraduate Writing Center!
When not actively taking appointments during practicum hours, coaches also work on developing organizational and study materials for students, planning outreach activities, and contributing social media content for the Academic Skills Instagram page.

Not only does this role allow you to advise and aid those who are struggling, but learn so many strategies and useful information overall. I can now relay what I have learned to people I know who are struggling, whether it be with motivation, procrastination, or study skills. Also, I have been using the strategies I have learned and found the 5-day study plan, and elaboration and explaining, to be extremely helpful for me. This course has taught me a lot.Fall 2024 CSV 302 Feedback
