Professor Christopher Lane has been named the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of the Environment and Life Sciences (CELS).
Lane has previously served as professor and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences where he led a productive research program. Most recently he served as Interim Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College, bringing valuable experience to the position during the evolving research funding landscape.
“His experience, creativity, and collaborative spirit will serve CELS well as we continue to grow research activity and support the success of our graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty,” says Jean VanderGheynst, professor and Dean of CELS.
“I started as interim in March, just as major changes were happening to research infrastructure at the federal level that were directly affecting the college,” Lane says. “Between the dynamic federal climate and changes happening at the college and university level, it became clear there were opportunities to help support the faculty and staff involved in research in CELS. I appreciate the opportunity Dean VanderGheynst has provided to help her and the leadership team navigate the new landscape and build on the research strengths of the college.”
Lane’s research, which focuses on the evolutionary genomics and biodiversity of algae and protists, has been supported by a range of state and federal agencies and private foundations, including USDA, NSF, NIH, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. He has secured more than $11.6 million in external funding as lead investigator and co-investigator and has published nearly 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and invited works, many co-authored with graduate students. In recognition of his contributions, Lane received the University of Rhode Island Advanced Career Faculty Research and Scholarship Excellence Award in 2020 and the College of the Environment and Life Sciences Research Excellence Award in 2019.
“Professor Lane’s record demonstrates his deep commitment to research excellence and graduate student mentorship,” says VanderGheynst.
