Orientation Details

2022 Flagship Orientation will take place from Monday, August 29 to Friday, Sept 2, 2022. We will send more information with finalized dates, numbers, and times as we get closer to orientation.

Orientation Schedule

An exact schedule for the week will be distributed upon check-in, but students should expect an evening of activities August 29, as well as a 9 am-5 pm schedule of activities the remainder of the week. (A more specific schedule will be distributed upon arrival.) Students should expect many icebreakers, linguistic preparation, and cultural activities.
Students should also come prepared to speak, hear, read, and write Chinese. The Chinese Flagship Program values immersion, and as such, it starts from Day 1.

Resident Move-In

Move-in for those who will be living on-campus during the school year will take place on Monday, August 29. Please schedule a move-in appointment via MyHousing. Once you have settled into your dorm, we ask you to check in at Hillside Hall’s main lounge at 3:00 pm.

Because most URI students will not be moving in until Sept 1st, all students attending Flagship orientation will be required to pay a reduced move-in fee of $17.50 per night through August 31, for a total of $52.50 (3 nights). This amount will be charged to students’ e-Campus accounts.
The Chinese Flagship Program will provide dinner on move-in night as well as breakfast, lunch, and dinner free of charge for the remainder of orientation until limited meal service open on Sept 1st.

Move-in Specifics:

  • Hillside Hall can be located by searching for Hillside on this map or by looking within area D4 of this map
  • Hillside Lounge is located on the first floor near the RA office. If you are facing Hillside from the front (standing on Campus Ave), the lounge is the room on the left side of the building with the large number 140 on the outside.
  • Several Flagship faculty teachers and staff will be on hand to help with the move-in and to answer any questions that may arise. Get ready to practice speaking Chinese with them.
  • Parking during move-in: Follow the move-in roadway signage posted and use the designated parking areas for move-in.
  • Parking after move-in: There is a free visitor lot at the Welcome Center. Parents may park their car in Parking Lot# 1 at the Welcome Center. You must obtain a virtual visitor pass online here.

Commuters

Commuters are asked to check-in during the same day as residents: August 29 at 3:00 pm in the Hillside Hall main lounge. (Hillside Lounge is located on the first floor near the RA office. If you are facing Hillside from the front/standing on Campus Ave, the lounge is the room on the left side of the building with the large number 140 on the outside.)

As commuters will not be living on-campus during orientation, they will not be responsible for paying any sort of housing cost. However, they are able to receive complimentary dinner on August 29, as well meals for the rest of orientation.

Tentative commuter schedule:
Commuters will be expected to attend all official Flagship orientation events and are asked to plan accordingly. Events include:

Parent/Guardian Information Session

We will hold an information session on the URI Chinese Language Flagship Program for parents, guardians, and students on Monday, August 29 from 3:30-4:30 pm in Hillside Hall. This info session is an excellent opportunity for everyone to learn about the program, scholarships, or any other aspects of URI college life. Any and all questions are highly encouraged.

We respectfully ask that parents and guardians plan to leave campus after the end of the info session, as orientation activities will start for students around 5:00 PM.
