Minor in Statistics

We live in an increasingly data-driven world and Statistics, the science to extract knowledge from data, is a leading discipline. Given its supporting role to other sciences, studying statistics has never been as important (and exciting!) as in present times. The Statistics section within CSS at URI is a growing group of scholars, teachers, and students committed in the advancement of quantitative reasoning, curious about exploring new areas of research, and aware of the importance of multidisciplinary collaborative work.

Applications range from biology to pharmacy, from ecology to oceanography, from networks to finance. Offering a wide array of graduate and undergraduate courses, collaboration and consulting to the majority of departments at URI, we are a well integrated, respected and sought after resource across campus.

Students who wish to declare a minor in statistics must complete 6 courses and earn at least 18 credits including STA 308 (4) or STA 307 (4) or STA 409 (4); STA 412 (4) or STA 411 (3); MTH 451 (3), STA 441 (4), and two additional statistics courses at the 300 level or above.

Specifically, this minor is intended to equip students with statistical skills and ability to think critically about information, to apply various statistical methods to real data problems in areas of the students’ professional field, to interpret and to report the results of the analysis.

The following four courses are required:

  • 3-4 credits – STA 307(4), STA 308(4), or 409(3)
  • 3–4 credits – STA 411(3) or STA 412(4)
  • 3 credits – MTH 451(3)
  • 4 credits – STA 441(4)

Two additional courses can be selected from the following list:

  • 4 credits – STA 305
  • 4 credits – STA 460
  • 3 credits – STA 492 (Special Topics in Statistics)
  • 1-3 credits – STA 491 (Directed Study in Statistics)

Note: STA 491 involves a more advanced work/project in statistics conducted under the supervision of the faculty. Also, students can take graduate courses in Statistics towards electives.

In addition, students are expected to complete MTH 131(3) or MTH 141(4); and MTH 215(3).

The list of the courses should be approved and signed by the Director of Statistics Undergraduate Studies, Prof. Yichi Zhang (yichizhang@uri.edu).
