Interim Exception
If you meet certain requirements, you’ll have a period of time after July 1, 2026, and before the new limits apply during which you might be eligible for a Direct Loan under the pre-OBBBA limits. This is called the “interim exception.”
Graduate and professional students are only eligible to borrow the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loans. Professional students are defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, 34 CFR 668.2(b). At this time, only the following programs at URI are classified as professional:
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D)
- Doctor of Clinical Psychology
