Federal Direct Graduate Unsubsidized Student Loan

The University of Rhode Island participates in the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loan Program. The University receives funds directly from the U.S. Department of Education and disburses (pays) them to eligible students.  There is no requirement to submit a separate bank loan application to receive your loan funds.  The student must file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the academic year they would like to receive the loan in order to be eligible for the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loan.

Academic Year 2025-26

The rates below are set by the federal government. The interest rate and origination fee pertains to Academic Year 2025-26.

Graduate Students borrowing through the Federal Direct Student Loan program at URI must complete the following steps:

  • Step 1: Accept all or a portion of the Unsubsidized Loan offered on the student’s financial aid award through the student’s e-Campus. This step must be completed each academic year if you choose to borrow your loan. If you do not accept your loan(s), ES will cancel your federal loan offer.  However, if you wish to reinstate your federal loans, please contact ES to request that they be re-offered.

First time graduate student borrowers must complete Step 2 and Step 3. You will need your FSA ID and password to complete Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note. Both items only need to be completed once.

  • Step 3: Complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) for graduate students electronically here.
