Provide a Plan

The template is the document that conveys to the committee information on the opportunities in the course for students to acquire the knowledge or skills necessary to achieve the student learning outcomes and a plan for assessment of those outcomes. There is a list of course proposal templates that includes the templates for all outcomes that need to be downloaded, completed, and then included with the submission. A copy of the blank STEM template appears below and there is an example of a completed template for a STEM course. The rules are specified in the first column, so for STEM you need to choose any 5 of the 7 elements (rows) from the list in the second column (Rubric Element) if you chose a full outcome. The third column contains the wording that corresponds to the Specific Course Outcomes that will appear on your syllabus for the full outcomes. These could be either the rubric elements restated or a modified version tailored to the discipline. In the final two columns you should identify the specific parts of the course where in the course students will get practice with the outcome (Student practice column) and how the assessment of that outcome will be accomplished (Assessment column).

Once the outcomes and the template elements have been selected you will need to provide information on the following:

STEM Discipline

Outcome:   My Class:
STEM Disciplines Knowledge (full rubric) Rubric Element Specific Course Outcome Student work used to assess achievement of the outcome (Assessment) How will this course provide content to address student outcomes? (Student practice)
Full Coverage:   address any five elements. Identifies facts, vocabulary, definitions, terms, concepts, people
Partial Coverage: address any three elements. Recognizes concepts or tools relevant for application to a task
Asks questions or frames hypotheses relevant to the task
Collects information relevant to address the task – e.g. data; literature sources
AnalyzesApplies concepts to address the task
AnalyzesDeconstructs An argument by indicating claims and/or evidence and contextualizes evidence within theoretical framework
AnalyzesEvaluates support for claims and justifies conclusions

Last Step: Once the plan is complete, it is time to submit the proposal.
