Timeline for Advising and Application
Meet with an Advisor
Education Abroad Advisors are here to guide you through your study away experience. Your first step is to attend an Information Session! During Spring Semester, there will be in-person and virtual information sessions on multiple days each week. Visit the Information Session Registration form for dates and times. Registration is required.
After you have attended an Information Session, you can schedule an individual appointment with your Education Abroad Advisor through Starfish.
Throughout the semester, a variety of representatives will also be available to discuss their programs and answer questions related to: semester and an academic year abroad, winter session and spring break options, domestic and international summer programs, national and international exchange, and international internships and service learning.
The Application Process
No matter what program you choose, all students must complete an application in URIAbroad, URI’s application management system. This ensures that URI has the necessary information for your study away experience.
Some programs require an additional application:
- URI Programs (faculty-led or URI semester programs): Only the URIAbroad application is required.
- Exchange & Affiliate Programs (e.g., TEAN, ISA, CIEE): You must complete both a URIAbroad application and a separate application on the host program’s website. Your education abroad advisor will guide you through the process for exchange programs.
Be sure to check the specific requirements for your program to avoid delays in your application process.
The initial application materials in URIAbroad are considered the pre-decision phase. Once all the requirements are completed, your application will be reviewed, and you will subsequently have your application moved by an education abroad advisor to the post-decision phase in URIAbroad.
Admission Criteria
Admission decisions concerning URI exchange programs, URI Faculty-Led Programs and international internships are made in consultation with faculty sponsoring the corresponding URI study away program. In the case of affiliated program providers, URI students must first be endorsed for off-campus study by the Office of International Education.
Endorsement is based on the following criteria:
- GPA (in general minimum of 2.5, some programs have higher requirements)
- Language proficiency (when applicable)
- Personal and academic recommendations (required for some programs)
- Verification of good social standing at URI
- Meet with an Education Abroad Advisor
- Written statement of plans and goals for the period of study abroad and/or internship (according to program guidelines)
Once you are admitted
Once you receive a decision from your program, find the information you will need to commit, and complete the post-decision process including pre-departure paperwork, off-campus registration and the pre-departure orientation.
Important
If you currently have a hold on your e-Campus account, please take immediate actions to resolve it. The registration/approval process for off-campus programs and admission decisions cannot be completed until all holds have been removed.
