Biography

Kenna is marine scientist studying (a) volcanoes, volcanic terrains, and sea water geochemistry in the deep sea; (b) Sea level change as recorded by coral reef ecosystems; (c) general environmental sciences and human impacts on land and at sea; (d) geoinformatics and data science for Earth applications; and (e) Science Communications for the general public, including broadcast media. Kenna joined GSO after a 32-year career as a professor at the University of Hawaii, including 4 years as an academic department chair there. She has participated in more than 30 research expeditions at sea and more than 300 HOV/ROV/AUV dives. Kenna has held leadership positions in multiple NSF initiatives, the Geochemical Society, and the Geological Society of America. She is passionate about expanding access for all people to science workplaces, funding, and knowledge discovery.
