What is the geophysical, chemical, and biological character of the subseafloor environment and how does it affect global elemental cycles and understanding of the origin and evolution of life?
Exploration of the deep biosphere has revealed that novel microbial physiologies and diverse life forms may exist and may be linked to metabolic processes in Earth’s early history or on other planets. In addition to understanding genetic diversity, exploring the deep biosphere and discovering novel chemicals and/or processes may lead to medical advances.
