GSO Hockey Team Victorious

The URI GSO hockey team, the Bay Blades, faced their annual adversary, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution High Stickers, in a two game series dubbed the Niskin Cup.

Game one was contested at URI’s Boss Ice Arena. GSO led 2-0 after first period goals by Conor McManus and Mike St. Laurent. However, WHOI responded in the second period with two goals of their own. After a goal by Tom Barron for GSO and another by WHOI in the third period, the game came down to a penalty shot for WHOI with roughly a minute and thirty seconds remaining. WHOI scored on the penalty shot, resulting in a dramatic and disappointing 4-3 loss for GSO.

In Game 2, played at the Gallo Ice Arena, Bourne Massachusetts, Dennis Hudson opened the scoring for GSO, which led 1-0 after one period. Jeff Domingoes and Kevin Rosa scored within 30 seconds of each other to expand the lead to 3 in the second period. Rosa and Domingoes each netted another in the third period before WHOI finally managed to break the shutout by scoring with a minute and thirty seconds remaining in the game.

After a loss of 4-3 and win of 5-1, GSO won the goal differential and brought the Niskin Cup home once again.
