Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

  • Most people will not have symptoms.
  • Symptoms can include genital discharge, discomfort with urination, pink eye, anal abnormalities.
  • Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are bacterial infections, thus they are treated and cured with antibiotics.
  • Samples for testing are typically obtained through urine sample from males (after not urinating for at least two hours) or self collected vaginal swab in females. No pelvic or Gyn exam is necessary for routine asymptomatic testing.
  • If there is a risk of infection in the throat or rectum, swabs of these areas can also be obtained.
  • Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are typically tested together from the same sample although you can opt to test for only one of them.
  • Results are usually available in 2-5 days.
  • This test can be falsely negative if tested too soon after exposure. If you do not have symptoms and have not been informed a partner has tested positive for Chlamydia or Gonorrhea, please wait at least 14 days after a concerning encounter to have testing.
  • Untreated infections can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, sterility, joint infection, abscesses and blindness.
  • Chlamydia and Gonorrhea isn’t spread through casual contact, so you CAN’T get chlamydia from sharing food or drinks, kissing, hugging, holding hands, coughing, sneezing or sitting on a toilet.
