Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

If you are sexually active, getting tested for STIs is important to protect your health. The following recommendations are from the Center for Disease Control:

  • Anyone from ages 13 to 64 should be tested at least once for HIV
  • All sexually active women under the age of 25 should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia every year
  • All sexually active gay and bisexual men should be tested at least once a year for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea
  • Sexually active gay and bisexual men may benefit from more frequent HIV testing
  • Anyone who has unsafe sex or shares injection drug equipment should get tested for HIV at least once a year

Types of STIs

STIs usually fall into two general categories: Bacterial, like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis, which are treated with antibiotics; or Viral, like Genital Warts or HPC, Herpes, and HIV. Herpes and HIV are both treated with antivirals. Viral STIs can be more difficult to manage, and early treatment after exposure is recommended.
