Syphilis

  • The chancre or rash is very infectious with contact.
  • It can be prevented by use of condoms or another barrier method.
  • You cannot get syphilis through casual contact with objects, such as: toilet seats, doorknobs, swimming pools, hot tubs, bathtubs, sharing clothing or utensils, and not through casual contact with those infected.
  • Testing is done at Health Services with a blood test and is typically resulted within 2 days.
  • Syphilis is easily treated and cured with antibiotics when caught early.
  • Untreated syphilis can cause birth defects, nerve and brain damage, paralysis, and death.
