The URI Library Innovation Labs empower students to move from idea to execution by providing open access to collaborative spaces, professional-grade tools, and technologies designed for hands-on learning. Across the Launch Lab, XR Lab, Audio Media Lab, MakerSpace, and Think Lab, students can prototype products, produce audio and video content, explore virtual and augmented reality, design and fabricate physical objects, and experiment with emerging digital tools. Whether working independently, in teams, or as part of a class or student organization, students use the Innovation Labs to build practical skills, test ideas, and translate creative and entrepreneurial thinking into real-world outcomes—supported by flexible spaces, modern equipment, and a culture of experimentation and learning.
In addition to immersive technologies, the Innovation Labs support photography, videography, podcasting, and live or recorded media production. Students can use cameras, lighting, microphones, green screens, and capture spaces to produce visual and audio content, experiment with hybrid physical-digital workflows, and integrate traditional media production with XR tools. This flexibility allows students to create everything from podcasts and short films to immersive, interactive experiences within a single, adaptable lab environment.
The Think Lab provides a dedicated environment for longer-term collaboration, supporting teams, student organizations, classes, and initiatives that are developing over time with the support of the Library Innovation Labs. Designed for sustained work rather than short sessions, the Think Lab enables groups to meet regularly, plan strategically, iterate on ideas, and manage complex projects. It is frequently used by clubs, interdisciplinary teams, and student-led ventures that require continuity, shared space, and access to nearby tools and expertise as their ideas move from concept to implementation.
The Cyber Lab is a virtual collaborative space being developed in partnership with TU Braunschweig Media Lab to support international learning, creative exchange, and global collaboration. Built as an online environment rather than a physical room, the Cyber Lab allows students to connect across institutions, time zones, and disciplines to collaborate on projects, participate in shared events, and explore emerging digital workflows. It is designed to extend the reach of the Library Innovation Labs beyond campus, enabling cross-cultural collaboration, virtual showcases, and immersive international learning experiences.
