A Rhode Island native, and a La-Salle Academy alumnus, Nicholas completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Rhode Island. As a competitive soccer player and amateur boxer, Nick knew early he wanted a career in which he could be involved with athletes. This led Nick to pursue a B.S. in Exercise Science/ Kinesiology at URI. Nick excelled in his studies, graduating summa cum laude, and being selected as the only student to receive the URI Excellence award in his department. While at URI, Nick complete an independent study internship in an Orthopedics laboratory at Rhode Island Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Qian Chen PhD . Nick’s project consisted of investigating the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis, and the development of stem cell lines and other potential therapeutics that could halt the degradation of cartilage in osteoarthritic patients.
Following his internship, given his strong work in the lab, Nick was granted a full-time position in the lab the year prior to attending medical school at Brown University. During medical school Nick continued to be involved in the lab, publishing multiple peer-reviewed research articles and presenting more than 20 abstracts at national conferences. Furthermore, Nick was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and was awarded the Sigma Xi Research Award. Given his research background and interest in athletics, the decision to pursue a career as an Orthopedic surgeon was an easy one. Nick is happy to announce that he will be staying at Brown University/ RIH for his residency training in Orthopedic Surgery which he will begin this coming June.
