Scholarships

You can receive guidance from the Office of National Fellowships on funding for your study abroad experience. The office hosts information sessions during the course of the year to help you manage the process, from the planning and application, through the award stages. National Scholarships

Toshizo Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarship Program  (up to $25,000)

Deadline: Early March
The US Japan Council Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to students for a semester or year-long study abroad program in either the United States or Japan. Funding is for US or Japanese citizens to study in the other country. Candidates should be in good academic standing at an accredited college or university, enrolled in a credit-bearing course of study at a college, university or approved academic center in the other country in the upcoming academic year, and demonstrate financial need for international study. Candidates are preferred who have been raised by a single parent or who have lost both parents, who do not have significant international travel or study abroad experience, and/or who are the first in the family to attend or graduate from college.  Scholarships up to $25,000.


Boren Scholarships (up to $20,000/year or up to $10,000/semester)

On-campus deadline: First week of January
First Draft/Priority Deadline: December
For students interested in languages deemed critical to national security. The Boren Scholarship award will cover the cost of a proposed study abroad program up to $20,000 per academic year or $10,000 per semester. Special summer opportunity for students in the STEM disciplines is also available. Boren scholars must commit to seeking employment with the national security community for one year upon graduation. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.

Beatrice S. Demers Foreign Language Fellows Program ($1,000-20,000)

Deadline: January
The Demers fund provides for fellowships for Rhode Island residents AND anyone who is a student at a Rhode Island college or university who wishes to pursue foreign language study.  Preference will be given to applicants from the University of Rhode Island. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship ($5,000 or $7,000)

Deadlines: October and March
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students with Pell Grant eligibility who are planning to study abroad. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Student Exchange Support Program

JASSO awards scholarships for short-term study in Japan to qualified international students who are accepted by a Japanese university, graduate school, junior college, college of technology (third grade or upper) or professional training college (hereinafter referred to as “Japanese school”) under a student exchange agreement or other student exchange arrangement on a short-term basis from about three months to one year.

Freeman-Asia Scholarship for Study in Asia

The Freeman-Asisa Scholarship provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Open to U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents. Summer term applicants must not have spent more than four weeks in the proposed country of study within the last five years. Semester term applicants must not have spent more than six weeks in the proposed country of study within the last five years.

Critical Languages Scholarship

The Critical Languages Scholarship (CLS) program is a very competitive fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students. The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period.

William & Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund

Deadline: April
The William & Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund provides grants for undergraduate and graduate students for international study related to their academic area(s) of interest. To qualify for this grant, applicants must be engaged in an intensive language experience that emphasizes in-depth experiential learning and/or scholarly research. This scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis, with preference given to those students who demonstrate financial need. Awards will range from $500 to $2000.
