You can receive guidance from the Office of National Fellowships on funding for your study abroad experience. The office hosts information sessions during the course of the year to help you manage the process, from the planning and application, through the award stages. Check their website for information sessions and additional information.

National Scholarships

Beatrice S. Demers Foreign Language Fellows Program ($1,000-25,000)

Deadline: January
The Demers fund provides for fellowships for Rhode Island residents AND anyone who is a student at a Rhode Island college or university who wishes to pursue foreign language study.  Preference will be given to applicants from the University of Rhode Island. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship ($5,000 or $7,000)

Deadlines: October and March
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students with Pell Grant eligibility who are planning to study abroad. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.

Internal Funding

Teodoro Raffaele Diaco Excellence Scholarships

Deadline: March 25
To be given to a student who wishes to study abroad at one of our Italian partner universities or at the URI Summer Program in Italy. Preference will be given to the IEP students who, if needed, may also be assisted with additional funds coming from the Teodoro Raffaele Diaco Excellence in Italian Endowment. William & Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund

Deadline: April
The William & Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund provides grants for undergraduate and graduate students for international study related to their academic area(s) of interest. To qualify for this grant, applicants must be engaged in an intensive language experience that emphasizes in-depth experiential learning and/or scholarly research. This scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis, with preference given to those students who demonstrate financial need. Awards will range from $500 to $2000.
