Biography

Hamouda Ghonem is Distinguished Professor of Engineering, Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Systems Engineering at University of Rhode Island (URI). He has a Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He joined URI in 1981, after 4 years at Canadian Pacific in Montreal, where he worked as a senior research engineer. Professor Ghonem’s research focuses on the simulation and prediction of time-dependent deformation and damage mechanisms under extreme temperature and environmental conditions. In this work, he has investigated a wide range of materials including titanium alloys, nickel base superalloys, low carbon steel and titanium metal matrix composites. These are studied by quantifying effects of precipitates and solid solution strengthening, grain boundary morphology and precipitate diffusion, migration and coarsening on creep-fatigue-environment interaction mechanisms.  This research has resulted in 26 research grants, more than 100 journal publications, 90 national and international conference presentations and proceedings, 40 technical reports and 20 invited lectures in both USA and Europe. Professor Ghonem is a fellow of ASME and has been granted sabbatical stays in leading European universities and aerospace research centers.
