URI’s online Master of Data Science is ideal for professionals employed in the public or private sector wishing to enhance their skills to advance in their current position or for students with experience who are looking to enhance their credentials and professional value in the job market.

Admission Criteria

Prior coursework or demonstrated equivalent experience in:

  • Programming in R and Python
  • Calculus (similar to URI’s MTH 131 or MTH 141)
  • Linear algebra (similar to URI’s MTH 215)
  • Introductory statistics (similar to URI’s STA 308 or STA 409)

Supporting Admission Documents

  • A personal statement discussing: 
    • Your interest in the field of Data Science
    • Why you chose to apply to this online program at URI
    • How your professional and/or career goals match with the Master of Data Science degree program
    • Any relevant work experience
  • CV/Resume
  • Two letters of recommendation from professional peers, mentors, colleagues, or former professors attesting to the students ability to complete graduate level course work.
  • College transcripts from all institutions attended.
  • If English is not your native language*, you’ll need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores (taken within the last two years). A minimum score of 91 for TOEFL under the new IBT-Internet Based Test or 575 under the paper-based testing, and a minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS is required. The URI Designated Institution Code for TOEFL is 3919.
    *Because students participating in URI Online programs are not required to physically study on campus in the United States, enrollment in a URI online program does not qualify for an F-1 visa.

The GRE is not required.
