Attendance Policy
Students are expected to attend class. Absences due to serious illness or health condition, religious observance, school-approved activities, and family emergencies shall be excused in accordance with the University Manual (sections 8.51.11 through 8.51.17).
All other absences will be deemed unexcused unless prior approval from the course coordinator is granted. It is the discretion of the course coordinator to determine attendance, extensions, grading, and make-up policies as outlined in the course syllabus. For unexcused absences, no credit or makeup time will be given for missed class assignments, such as but not limited to, exams, homework, quizzes, and participation scores.
Health Services Medical Note Policy
URI Health Services will not provide illness excuse notes for mild, self-limited illnesses of less than 3 days duration. If a student requires 3 or more days away from their academic responsibilities, a Dean’s Notification will be made via the URI Health Services’ administration team. In addition, students with new medical conditions with the potential to have a long-term effect on their academic career may be referred to the University’s Office of Disability, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DAI).
Dean’s Notices
Students who have documentation supporting an absence can reach out to the Assistant Dean of Student and Academic Affairs within the College of Pharmacy for assistance. The role of this office is to verify the absence and maintain confidentiality, while notifying the faculty on their behalf. This may include students facing acute, urgent, or unforeseen circumstances (ie: serious illness, injury, or hospitalization) that significantly impact their ability to attend class or complete academic work for 3 or more consecutive days.
Bereavement Policy
The University Bereavement Policy is outlined in detail on the Student Support and Advocacy Services website. The purpose of this policy is to provide students the time to attend the bereavement services of family members. In applying the guidelines below, students are strongly encouraged to use their judgment about the time they need and can afford to take, given their academic responsibilities and goals. Similarly, students should use their discretion about the need to take more extended time through mechanisms such as late course drops or leave of absence (when eligible to do so).
