Research
Objective:
To develop and evaluate a 10-year regional antibiogram of ESKAPE pathogens from urine cultures to identify significant changes in resistance.
Background:
- ESKAPE pathogens:
Group of six organisms with widespread distribution and ability to “escape” the effects of antibacterial drugs.(1)
The rapid worldwide increase in antimicrobial resistance among these organisms has exceeded the pace of new antimicrobial development.(2)
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs):
Around 80 to 85% uncomplicated UTIs are caused by Escherichia coli.
Also, species like Enterococci, Klebsiella and Proteus mirabilis account for small percentage of overall infections.(3)
