Standardized tests such as Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program Exams (CLEP), Advanced-Level Qualifications (A-Levels), as well as Project Lead the Way (PLTW) End of Course Assessments or DSST exams can be used to earn college credit. In addition, institutions like URI can also award credit based on comprehensive exams developed by campus faculty which students can request – called “proficiency exams”.
Review the list below to learn more about the credit by examination pathways and determine if you are eligible for college credit. Information on the exams, how to send URI your official transcript/scores, and who will evaluate and post your earned credit is included below.
For any questions, reach out to the Coordinator for Prior Learning at zakary_pereira@uri.edu.
Advanced Placement (AP)
Advanced Placement (AP) Exams: AP exams are college-level exams administered by the College Board that students can take in high school to earn college credit prior to enrollment. You may earn advanced placement credit for college if you’ve completed college-level AP exams in high school and earned the minimum score required by the URI academic department. Credit will only be awarded based on official AP exam scores sent to URI by the College Board.
Scores must be sent directly from The College Board. For AP credit equivalencies, please search ‘THE COLLEGE BOARD AP/CLEP’ in the Transfer Evaluation System (TES). Once scores are received and the student has enrolled at URI, Enrollment Services will post any earned AP credits.

AP Business with Personal Finance = XXX 1XX (3 credits) with score of 3 or higher

You may earn international baccalaureate credit for college if you’ve completed and obtained a score of 5, 6, or 7 on the Higher Level IB exams.
Scores must be sent directly from the IB Website. Students may consult the IB credit equivalency chart to learn more about their potential credit awards. Once scores are received, the Coordinator for Prior Learning will post any earned IB credits.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Exams: CLEP exams are standardized college-credit tests administered by the College Board that allow students to earn college credit by demonstrating subject proficiency. You may earn CLEP testing credit if you achieve the minimum score required by the URI academic department on a CLEP exam.
CLEP scores must be sent to URI directly from The College Board (even if taking the exam at URI). For a listing of transferable CLEP scores and credit equivalencies, please search ‘THE COLLEGE BOARD AP/CLEP’ in the Transfer Evaluation System (TES). Once scores are received, your degree-granting college will post any earned CLEP credits.
*Please note: For current URI students, permission of your Academic Dean and submission of the CLEP Prior Approval Form is required. Current URI students may register to take a CLEP exam at the Academic Testing Center (see website for step-by-step instructions). For Non-URI students, CCRI is the nearest available testing center in Rhode Island.*
Advanced Level Qualifications (A-Level)
Advanced Level Qualifications (A-Levels): A-Levels are advanced qualification exams administered internationally that students can take in secondary school to earn college credit and demonstrate mastery in specific subjects. Students may earn credit for their A-Level exams if they have earned a score of A, B or C. No credit is awarded for AS level exams.
A General Certificate of Education (GCE), or Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), with listed A-Level exam scores must be sent to URI directly from the relevant Examination Board. For a listing of A-Level course equivalencies, please consult the Transfer Equivalency Database (TES) – equivalencies are listed by Examination Board (e.g. Cambridge, AQA, etc.). Project Lead the Way (PLTW)
Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Exams: Project Lead the Way exams are college-credit assessments administered through Project Lead the Way’s STEM curriculum that allow high school students to earn college credit through project-based learning in engineering, biomedical sciences, and computer science. You may earn credit if you have achieved the minimum score of 70% on the End of Course (EoC) assessment for the specific PLTW courses that have been reviewed for college credit by the American Council on Education and URI Faculty.
All EoC exam score reports must be sent to the CPL Coordinator (zakary_pereira@uri.edu) directly from PLTW, your teacher, or program coordinator (see example PLTW EoC score report). For a listing of PLTW credit equivalencies and minimum score requirements, search ‘American Council on Education’ in the Transfer Evaluation System (TES) and refer to the PLTW course equivalencies.
