Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the landscape of higher education, opening up opportunities in research, teaching, and community outreach. At the same time, it is posing questions and challenges around ethics, bias, and access. URI is actively exploring the impact and opportunities of AI. As a public, flagship research university, our mission and responsibility are to prepare students for the future they will occupy.
AI literacy among students, faculty, and staff will be critically important moving forward as this technology is incorporated into more and more facets of our lives and becomes central to a broader array of professions. We are committed to being at the forefront of AI in higher education. This means seizing upon opportunities while being vigilant and proactive about the challenges posed by this technology.

URI’s Inaugural AI Task Force (2023-2024)
The first URI Academic Affairs Artificial Intelligence Task Force was charged with exploring the impact and potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) across the Academic Affairs unit. Subcommittees undertook this examination across three domains: Teaching and Learning, Research, and University Functions
The report highlights the key findings and recommendations from each subcommittee, addressing the current campus climate, implementation and policy considerations, and recommendations related to AI integration. Although Academic Affairs is the primary focus of the report, application of AI tools across other university units is examined in the University Functions portion of the report.
