Each year in August, the University offers orientation events for all new faculty members. Our goal is to welcome you to the university community and connect you to the resources you need and to make your transition to URI as smooth as possible.

Professional Development Opportunities

Strategies and Tools for Teaching at URI

Date: August 14, 2023 – August 17, 2023
Time: 9am – 12:30pm
The sessions will be held on Zoom.

Description: Strategies and Tools is for you if you are new to URI and would like to implement teaching strategies geared toward fostering equity, diversity, and inclusive teaching. We will discuss strategies to align your assignments with your course’s learning outcomes and explore ways to help your students build the skills they need to perform well on key assignments. We will also build practical skills in using digital tools to support your teaching. Finally, you will become acquainted with some of the key offices and people at URI who can help support your teaching and professional growth at URI.

Tech Day

Date: August 24, 2023
Time: 9:30am – 4pm

Description: Tech Day is an annual ed tech innovation day for faculty and staff. It hosts multiple tracks and virtual sessions centered on a new theme each year.
Both URI ed tech support staff and faculty present use case studies, best practices, ideas, solutions, technology curriculum design, and emerging educational technology innovations. Tech Day participants may pick and choose sessions of interest to take technology enhanced learning to the next level.

University Libraries New Faculty Orientation

Description: The University of Rhode Island Libraries utilize the newest technologies to ensure optimum access to, and delivery of, information for the University and State of Rhode Island. As partners in the teaching, research, and service missions of the University, the Libraries acquire, organize, and preserve materials in all formats and provide instruction in their use. Additional resources include our institutional repository, makerspace, AI lab, and membership in the Boston Library Consortium. This session will provide an introduction to our services and answer your specific questions. Presented by Amanda Izenstark, Reference & Instructional Design Librarian.

Division of Research New Faculty Orientation

Date: Wednesday, September 27, 2023
Time: 12pm – 2pm – Hardge Forum, Multicultural Center

The Division of Research orientation is an opportunity for new faculty to take part in an overview of the research enterprise at the University of Rhode Island. Faculty will meet the staff who assist researchers throughout the grant process. The orientation will include information on finding funding, writing competitive proposals, preparing proposals, budgets, managing awards, addressing human and animal subject research, protecting and commercializing intellectual property, and public relations related to research programs.

Faculty Writing Group

Interested in joining a new writing group? If you would welcome the community and support of fellow writers, consider registering for this Fall’s Faculty Writing Group. The group will meet every Wednesday 1.00 – 2.00 pm in the Library and Learning Commons, Kingston Campus. National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD)

The University of Rhode Island is an Institutional Member of the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD). The NCFDD is a nationally recognized, independent organization that provides online career development and mentoring resources.

Our institutional membership will provide access for all University of Rhode Island faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students to utilize NCFDD’s broad range of online virtual programs and resources.
