Goal-Driven Learning Outcomes

Student Learning Outcomes (Competencies) by Goal:

Below, we provide statements of observable, measurable results of the educational experience, linked to the goals of the Mental and Behavioral Health Counseling program. These learning outcomes specify expectations for student learning that are meaningfully derived from the program’s educational philosophy.

Goal 1: 

To produce graduates who have the specialized knowledge and practice skills for entry as a practitioner-scholar in health service psychology;

Learning Outcomes:

  • 1.1 Students will possess knowledge and skills to facilitate change through intervention.
  • 1.2 Students will possess knowledge of and be skilled in evidence-based assessment.
  • 1.3 Students will demonstrate the ability to apply relevant research literature to clinical decision-making in intervention and assessment.

Goal 2:

To produce graduates who have knowledge of and adhere to the ethical and sensitive practice of health service psychology; 

Learning outcomes:

  • 2.1 Students will demonstrate knowledge of ethical guidelines and display solid problem-solving skills when confronted with ethical situations in clinical and professional settings.
  • 2.2 Students will engage in professional development behaviors.
  • 2.3 Students will possess an understanding of how their own personal/cultural history, attitudes, and biases may affect how they understand and interact with people different from themselves.
  • 2.4 Students will be able to articulate an approach to working effectively with diverse individuals and groups and apply this approach effectively in their professional work.
  • 2.5 Students will demonstrate knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of cultural and individual diversity in the application of research to and in the practice of health service psychology.
