Sustainable Transportation Options
Transportation and Parking is committed to providing sustainable transportation options to the URI campus community. We encourage faculty, staff and students to take advantage of on-campus shuttle service options that are provided as well as carpooling, ride sharing, Fuel Efficient Vehicles (FEV) and Electric Vehicles (EV) parking spots.
Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations and Fuel Efficient Vehicles (FEV)
What qualifies an EV? EVs are vehicles that are either partially or fully powered on electric power.
Electric Vehicle Charging Stations:
The Kingston campus has 10 ChargePoint electric vehicle (EV) charging spaces.
These EV charging stations are located in the following parking lots: 1, 10, 22 and the Mallon Center lot. Please view the campus map for specific information regarding EV Charger locations on the campus.
The Narragansett Bay campus has 12 ChargePoint electric vehicle (EV) and 2 Accessible (EV) charging spaces.
These stations are located at the Pier Road parking lot.
Do I need to charge my vehicle if I am parked in an EV space?
Yes, vehicles parked in these spaces MUST be actively charging. Any vehicle parked in an EV space not actively charging will be subject to a $35 citation.
A valid university parking permit/pass is required during hours of enforcement in these spaces as well.
Do I need to pay to charge my EV?
The first four (4) hours are free then charges apply if still connected to EV station. Users are encouraged to move their vehicle after or before 4 hours. To use ChargePoint EV charging stations, users must first sign up for a ChargePoint account online at www.chargepoint.com or call 1-888-758-4389 for driver support.
TAP reserves the right to assess charging fees in the future to offset electrical, infrastructure, parking and administrative costs; to maintain the chargers; and to help expand the charging program to other locations.
Etiquette for Shared/Limited Equipment:
- Don’t charge if you don’t need to. Leave the spot free for another EV driver that might really need the charge.
- Only occupy an EV charging spot while your car is being charged. When the charging session is completed, unplug, and move your car to free up the spot for another EV driver. (Charges apply after 4hours)
- When completed with a charging session, wrap the charging cord neatly and place it back on the charging station where no one can trip on it or drive over it.
What qualifies a FEV? Any make/model/year/vehicle type that meets the following MPG, according to the U.S. EPA and listed on fueleconomy.gov: 30 City, 35 Highway, 35 Combined
A list of all vehicles can be found via their Power Search page: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/powerSearch.jsp
Carpool Permit
URI offers carpool permits with priority parking spaces to students who commute to campus with three or more individuals in their vehicle. Carpoolers benefit from saving money by sharing the cost of the permit and gas, access to priority parking areas, cutting emissions and reducing vehicle wear and tear. College Break Bus
College Break Bus offers round-trip or one-way rides between locations in New York and New Jersey and the URI Campus for Thanksgiving, winter, and spring breaks. Our buses offer free Wi-fi, live GPS tracking, an onboard restroom, friendly drivers, and plenty of space for luggage. Our trips are for College Students Only which is just another reason for our popularity. URI parents have been spreading the word with social media hoping to gain more students to ride the bus as well. With more students riding, we can offer trips to more locations! It’s a win-win!
