Glocester Heritage Gardens

Dr. Reuben Mason House Medicinal Garden
1111 Putnam Pike | Chepachet, RI 02814

Started in 2012 the garden grows to be more part of the 1747 grounds of the country doctor’s house every year. Dr. Mason lived there in the 1790’s so everything in the garden represents what the doctor may have grown as part of treating his patients of that time.

Visitors of the garden are welcomed to visit the 18th century and learn the value of these plants in our countries early days of medicine and how they compare to todays. People are always amazed of the beauty of these plants and the scents as they walk along the stone paths and brush against them.

In conjunction with our host the Glocester Heritage Society events are held every year where visitors are welcomed to tour the garden and then invited into the house where Dr. Mason’s office has been restored to his time. We do also have a garden plant sale every spring where many of our plants find good homes. At the events we have soil testing, a kiosk, and old time vendors on the property. Also look for us when URI Master Gardeners have their Community Garden Day events.

The URI Master Gardener volunteers meet at the garden every 4th Saturday morning from 9 AM to 12 noon weather permitting from April to October to tend the garden and answer your questions. We look forward to your visits.

This is a new project just started in the fall of 2016 with our host the Glocester Heritage Society located in the heart of Chepachet Village’s historic district. The store was erected in 1814 and the garden we are creating will go from then to the Civil War. This will be a re-creation of what may have been found behind a general store to help sustain a family who worked in the store and lived up above. The garden is surrounded by historic buildings and one does get the feeling of that time gone by.

We are in the process of researching what would have made this kind of garden and look forward to sharing our findings and learning from you. We will be starting the design and planting this spring of 2017. As we move along events will be planed and opened to the public.

More information on these gardens can be found here: http://www.glocesterheritagegardens.org

Our URI Master Gardener volunteers meet at the garden the 2nd Saturday of every month from 9 AM to 12 noon weather permitting. We welcome visitors to stop by and be part of the creation of this new old garden. Come learn the fascinating history of this building in how it related to the town and the surrounding farms.
